Performing Arts
NCG Performing Arts offers many exciting opportunities in Dance, Drama and Performance
KAPA HAKA: PIKIMAi
Pikimai is our Kapa Haka group, which this year is tutored by an ex-student, Amelia Kawe. Amelia was a member of Pikimai during her time at college and has performed at National Secondary Schhols' Kapa Haka and at senior level at Te Matatini.
The group meets regularly to learn a variety of items for performance. Pikimai performs at major school events such as Commemoration Service, Cultural Diversity Day, Mid Winter Music and Arts Awards.
New members are always welcome.
SCGNZ SHEILAH WINN SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
Every year many students perform in the Nelson regional Shakespeare Festival. NCG girls had success being selected for the National Shakespeare Festival, the National Schools Shakespeare Production and for the London Globe Theatre NZ Youth Shakespeare Company.
HOUSE DRAMA HOUSE MUSIC
All students have the opportunity to perform in House Music or House Drama (they alternate) each year. It’s a great way to generate a sense of community, fun and house spirit. House performance nights are always packed out.
STAGE CHALLENGE (BIENNIAL)
This student led and choreographed event is a great expression of talent vitality and leadership. It is a combined production involving NCG girls and NC boys.
VAST DANCE FESTIVAL
Only two years old, this regional schools dance festival is a great opportunity for our girls, who have so much experience and skill in a variety of Dance styles. It’s their big chance to choreograph and perform their work to a Nelson audience.
BIENNIAL PRODUCTION NELSON COLLEGE FOR GIRLS AND NELSON COLLEGE
Every second year the combined colleges produce a high calibre show. In 2013 Romeo and Juliet astounded audiences with powerful dramatic performances and unique features, such as the Haka. In 2011 an enlivening production of FAME the musical wowed audiences with beautiful singing, acting and modern dance styles.
SHOWCASE
This is an upbeat variety show, which is organised and run by the Arts Leaders and their Arts Committee. This talent quest can involve Music, Dance, Drama and more.
THEATRESPORTS CLUB
The NCG improvisation group have taken out the Nelson regional title for two years running and went on to perform at the National competition in Christchurch. They came second in the National competition in 2012.
NCEA DRAMA CLASS PRODUCTIONS
All senior Drama classes put on a public performance to extend their dramatic skills and share their dedication to their art with parents, friends and family.
Our junior year 10 Drama productions are open to parents.
PERFORMING ARTS AWARDS
The Performing Arts Awards is a night of formal ceremony and vibrant performances as we celebrate the incredible wealth of talent and involvement of our students in the Performing Arts at NCG.
