Nelson Young Parents’ School - Social Worker

The Nelson Young Parents’ School - Te Kurā Matua Rangatahi ō Whakatū is based at Auckland Point School and offers the opportunity for young parents in the Nelson region to continue their secondary education by providing a teaching and learning environment alongside childcare facilities.

Reporting to the Head Teacher, we are looking to employ a part-time Social Worker to support our rangatahi, tamariki and wider whanau.

Utilising your training, experience and enthusiasm for youth and education, you will work with students, staff, whanau and outside social service agencies to develop and implement support systems suited to our students and their specific needs.

In addition to providing meaningful social work assistance to our students, you will be involved in identifying needs and strengths of each student. Working alongside staff, you will help develop individualised learning plans which incorporate hauora, transition and academic goals.

Utilising your social work skills, you will also work with the Head Teachers to establish pathways for potential students interested in attending the Nelson Young Parents’ School, making them aware of the social services resources available to them in conjunction with the class-based education.

This role is term time only, is fixed term for ideally 20 hours per week, however we can be flexible with number of hours, commencing on 31 January 2023 and finishes at the end of the Nelson Young Parents’ School year in December 2023. Ideally this role will be worked over five days, however there is flexibility with this. Mondays and Fridays must form part of the hours worked. It is highly likely this role would continue however it is fixed term due to availability of funding.

You will need to show initiative, be reliable and organised, collaborate with staff and have an approachable disposition. You will need to embrace the Young Parents’ School values and vision and enjoy relating and advocating for young people while supporting them in their motivation to continue learning.
